How do I take director training?
Log in or create a CAO account, go to My Profile, then My Director Training to begin.
- Anyone can complete our director training at no cost
- New condo board directors must complete it within six months of being elected or appointed.
- It takes about seven hours and can be done at your own pace
Why am I receiving notifications to complete the director training?
These emails are courtesy reminders, which go to directors in Ontario that need to complete the training according to the records we have. These records are based on your condo corporation’s filings with us.
Board directors must complete the training within six months of being elected, appointed or re-elected, unless they’ve already done so in the past seven years.
The most common reason you may have received this email in error is that you completed the director training with a different email address than the one your corporation gave us. The simplest way to fix this is to get your condo corporation to file a notice of change with us and edit your email.
Why did we receive notice that our board director ceased?
These notices are sent to condo corporations whose directors did not complete the mandatory CAO Director training within their six-month deadline. A condo director or manager should file a notice of change to remove that director from the Condo Registry. Directors disqualified for not completing their mandatory training can be re-elected or appointed after completing it.
How do I become a condo board director?
As a first step, all you need to do is put your name forward for election at your condo’s upcoming Annual General Meeting. You may be asked to provide a speech introducing yourself and why you would be a good fit. Our Director Competency Framework also provides more information on what sorts of skills are good to have.
Once elected, you then must take CAO’s free online mandatory training, which prepares board directors for governing their condo community and is helpful for anyone interested.
What experience do I need to be a condo board director?
Director qualifications are set by in the Condo Act, and state that directors must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not be bankrupt
- Not have a former court ruling finding them incapable of serving
- Must comply with required disclosure obligations
Condo corporations may set additional requirements in their governing documents. One common such additional requirement is for directors to live in the building.
If you’re elected, you must take CAO’s mandatory director training.
Can I take condo director training from another course provider instead of CAO?
The CAO’s training is the only one that is legally required.
Courses offered by other organizations offer great continuing education and can deepen your knowledge of condo governance, but they don’t fulfil the Condo Act requirement to take CAO’s mandatory training.
