What does the CAO do

What does the CAO do?

The Condominium Authority of Ontario is a consumer protection organization that aims to improve condo living by providing information, education and dispute resolution services to condo communities across the province. Our funding comes from condo fees that condo corporations pass on to us after collecting them from owners at a rate of $1 per voting unit per month. We report into the Ministry of Business and Public Service Delivery and Procurement.

What is the Condo Act?

The Condo Act is a consumer protection legislation that regulates condo life in Ontario. Condo owners, residents and corporations must comply with the Act and their condo’s governing documents cannot conflict with it.

Who is on CAO’s Board of Directors?

The Condo Authority is governed by an independent board of directors, which is accountable to the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement for CAO’s performance. Elected directors are selected through a Nominating Committee process, while Ministerial appointments are filled through a process administered by the Government of Ontario’s Public Appointments Secretariat.

Who are CAO’s staff?

The CEO and Registrar is appointed by the board and leads approximately 70 staff in all aspects of CAO’s operations. Our executive leadership and senior management teams ensure CAO can deliver its mandated services effectively.

What is CAO’s mandate?

The CAO is a non-profit organization mandated by the Condo Act to enhance consumer protection and support condo living. We do this by providing fully digital information, education and dispute resolution services for condo communities across the province.
