Oct 16, 2020

Annual Meeting Overview

On September 16, 2020, the Condominium Authority of Ontario (CAO) hosted our Annual Meeting of Members. The Members of the CAO consist of the members of the Board of Directors. Owners, directors and other individuals from the condo sector, as well as the general public, were all invited to attend.

This year’s meeting saw a strong turnout of over 200 attendees. The meeting agenda included presentation of the CAO’s audited financial statements, confirmation of auditors and election of new directors to the board.

Election of Directors to the CAO Board

This year’s meeting saw the election of four new directors to the CAO’s Board of Directors. After a broad-based public posting through the Globe and Mail and two rounds of interviews, the Board’s Nominating Committee recommended these individuals for the following terms:

  • Mary Throop for a one-year term
  • Larry Banack for a two-year term
  • Allison Scanlan for a two-year term
  • Erik Levinson for a three-year term

As condo owners themselves, these individuals, together with the existing board of directors, bring demonstrated and diverse expertise in several areas that are crucial to the Board’s role in supporting condo owners and enhancing our efforts toward achieving our consumer protection mandate.

With their terms confirmed, our newly constituted Board of Directors will participate in a strategic planning session to set the direction of the CAO, as we look to continue our transition towards a steady-state organization.

Conducting Owners’ Meetings During the COVID-19 Pandemic: What Owners and Directors Need to Know

One of the most pressing topics for the condo sector during the COVID-19 pandemic has been the how best to hold owners’ meetings such as an annual general meeting.

Our Annual Meeting of Members was hosted with a combination of limited in-person attendance (adhering to COVID-19 restrictions) and remote access for owners and other individuals from Ontario’s condo sector.

Based on our own lessons learned and provisions under the Condominium Act, 1998, we have developed a helpful guide for holding effective owners’ meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
