How to deal with a vibration issue

Vibrations are among the most common issues in condominium communities.

Occasionally you may hear or feel vibrations coming from other units or the common elements in a condo building because of ongoing maintenance, mechanical systems or the actions of another resident.

Step 1. Identify the issue

Vibrations can be a nuisance if they are excessive, persistent and disruptive. Common sources include another resident, a utility, an amenity, piping, mechanical systems or an external source such as construction or traffic.

Vibrations or tremors are typically identified by feel, such as when you can feel the floor or walls moving. They don’t necessarily make a sound, but often will.

Here are some common examples of vibrations:

Operation of the common elements including elevators, HVAC systems, garbage chutes or plumbing

Neighbors dancing or doing aerobic exercise

Nearby construction

Amenities such as a gym or party room

Appliances such as dishwashers or laundry machines

Renovations such as drilling or hammering
