CAO releases new guide to support self-represented parties

Feb 05, 2025

The Condominium Authority of Ontario has been committed to its consumer protection mandate and vision of harmonious condo communities since its launch in 2017. The CAO helps condo community members to resolve issues early and provides guidance for the collaborative resolution of condo disputes, including providing Ontario’s first online tribunal, the Condominium Authority Tribunal.

The CAT’s online dispute resolution system was designed from its onset to be fair, quick and inexpensive and allow condo community members to solve their disputes while representing themselves through the Tribunal’s three-stage process. We are pleased to add a new resource to our collection with the launch of a brand-new guide – the CAO Guide for Self-Represented Parties – to support owners or condo corporations represent themselves in a CAT case In developing the guide, CAO consulted with former Tribunal case participants and legal representatives. These individuals and corporations told us that having a better understanding of condo principles and the Tribunal’s process will help self-represented parties move more effectively through their case and reach a satisfactory outcome. The new resource equips them with this knowledge and more! Its comprehensive information and step-by-step guidance support Tribunal parties throughout the entirety of their case. It covers:

  • Overview of CAO
  • How to try to resolve your issue collaboratively before taking further steps
  • The Tribunal, its jurisdiction and three-stage process
  • What to consider before filing or responding to a case
  • What to expect from the Tribunal and what’s expected of you
  • How to make use of information found in cases similar to yours
  • Tips to prepare for, build and participate in your case
  • And more!
