CAO Consumer Protection and Compliance Policy

The Condominium Authority of Ontario was established by legislation with a mandate to inform and protect condo consumers through information, education and dispute resolution services. The CAO Consumer Protection and Compliance Policy sets out the CAO’s approach for protecting condominium consumers by verifying compliance with legal obligations under the Condominium Act.

The CAO’s consumer protection and compliance practices verify that the key information filed by condo corporations is up-to-date and publicly available for condo owners and buyers. The CAO monitors this data to confirm that condo directors have

  • Met their mandatory training requirements
  • Condo boards have quorum and the legal authority to act on behalf of the corporation,
  • Only qualified, licensed condominium managers and management companies work with condo boards.

While the vast majority of condo corporations already comply with these legal requirements, CAO’s consumer protection and compliance practices have been implemented to help protect all condo owners from consequences due to non-compliance, such as additional costs, penalties and other liabilities.
